Letter from the Principal (2/12/2021)

Dear Charlestown Families,

Once again, Winter 2021 impacted us this week.  I want to thank everyone for your flexibility and patience as we navigate this school year.  Based on the forecast for next week it looks like it may impact us again.  Please make sure your child’s Ipad is charge and that they are ready for school on those days.  In addition, on those days your child may receive a Teams call from a Charlestown Support Staff member for addition support.  We know that families and children are struggling during this pandemic, so this is just an addition resource of support.  Finally, just a reminder that this Monday, February 15th, there is NO SCHOOL in honor of Presidents’ Day.  Below are some informational items.

MAP Testing – We will begin MAP testing all students in grades 1-5 in the area of math.  The window for testing is February 16th though March 15th.  We are currently working on a schedule.  Your child’s teacher will inform you of when testing will take place for their homeroom.

Black History Month – A section of the District website is full of resources and information that celebrates Black History Month. In addition to a resource list of websites and literature that highlight the contributions of African Americans, you can also access video biographies prepared by Great Valley staff members and students about influential Black Americans. While many areas of our curriculum infuse learning about black history throughout the year, our efforts in February highlight the rich intellectual, cultural, and societal accomplishments and contributions of African Americans. Be sure to check out the site at www.gvsd.org/bhm

Revised Guidelines for Schools – At the end of January, both the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Department of Health revised the guidelines associated with school closings related to positive COVID-19 cases reported among students and staff. Specifically, the guidelines were revised to now allow school districts to work more locally with their county or municipal health department to determine if a school building needs to be closed. This means that schools no longer need to automatically close when a certain number of COVID-19 cases are reached. Instead, considerations around cleaning and sanitation, as well as contact tracing and quarantine recommendations, are made in conjunction with the CCHD to determine if and for how long a school may need to close. We will, however, continue to maintain our online COVID-19 Dashboard so that we are transparent about the number of confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases among our students and staff.
