    Principal Named for 5/6 Center

    Dr. Kyle Hammond was named principal of the Great Valley School District’s new 5/6 Center at the Feb. 21 meeting of the Great Valley School Board. Currently the principal of Sugartown Elementary School, Hammond will transition into his new role this summer to allow his focus to be on planning and preparation for the new school’s opening. The 5/6 Center will open to students in the fall of 2024.

    Superintendent to Host Coffee Chats with Community

    Families and community members are invited to participate in an informal opportunity to share coffee and conversation with Superintendent Daniel Goffredo. This new engagement series, called Coffee and a Chat with the Superintendent, is designed for community members to bring any questions they may have about the district to the table, or to just come to learn about some of the things happening District-wide.

    The GVSD launched a new series on its YouTube channel that will chronicle the 5/6 Center project. Videos will detail the history and need for the project, will discuss the design of the new school, and will allow viewers to watch the progression of construction.

    Speaker Series Returns

    The Great Valley School District Speaker Series will return during the 2022-2023 school year with events that will focus on both the physical and mental well-being of the community. In partnership with local community organizations and mental health experts, the Speaker Series will offer evening learning opportunities for parents, staff, and the community.

    New Assistant Principal Named for Great Valley High School

    At its July 18 meeting, the Great Valley School Board approved the appointment of Christa Keister as the third assistant principal at Great Valley High School, a position that is new for the coming school year. Her appointment provides additional leadership and support for the increasing population seen at the high school, which now has a student enrollment of more than 1,400.

    The Great Valley School District created a new position for the 2022-23 school year that will ensure more consistent support for K-12 mental health efforts district-wide. The position will focus on both broad and targeted interventions for students.

    At its June 13 meeting, the Great Valley School Board approved the appointment of Kevin Bray as an elementary assistant principal. Bray will be assigned to both General Wayne and K.D. Markley Elementary Schools. His appointment provides additional leadership and support for the increasing populations seen in both schools.

    School Food Program

    For the past two years, under US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Waivers provided during the pandemic, we have been able to provide breakfast and lunch to ALL students at no cost. Current communication from the USDA indicates that waivers are not going to be extended for the 22-23 school year, meaning that we and other districts will once again be required to charge for meals.

    Mask-Optional Moved to Monday, 2/28/22

    The CDC released updated guidance that eased its guidelines on masking, including in schools. This reflects the substantial drop in cases, as well as the decreased risks from the Omicron variant, and will prompt GVSD to move to a mask-optional environment starting this Monday, February 28, instead of the original date of Monday, March 7.

    Act 34 Hearing

    An Act 34 Hearing, a required public hearing related to the construction of the new 5/6 Center, will be held on March 2, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Great Valley High School. Public comment related to the project will be accepted at the hearing.

    District Health and Safety Plan Revised

    The Great Valley Board of School Directors approved revisions to Great Valley’s Health and Safety Plan at its meeting on February 22. The most recent revisions were made to reflect the decline in both incidence and positivity rates as well as other localized metrics seen across Chester County and in the Great Valley community. If conditions stabilize and rates remain low, the plan will allow GVSD to move to a mask-optional environment, effective March 7, 2022.
