  • Office 365 for Students

Office 365, offered at no cost to our students, is a web-based service integrated into classroom instruction that increases communication and collaboration among students and teachers. Grade 3-12 students will have a district provided email address and access to online document storage. This will be an internal email system; therefore, students will only be able to send email messages to their teachers and to other students within the district.  In addition, Microsoft does not request any personal information, and the Great Valley School District does not provide personal student data (i.e., birthdate, address, phone number, grades, test scores) to Microsoft.

Guidelines for the responsible use of the Great Valley Office 365 for Education by students:

    1. Official GVSD email address - All students will be assigned a username@student.gvsd.org email account. This email will be considered the student’s official email address until the student is no longer enrolled in the Great Valley School District. This will be an internal email system; therefore, students will only be able to send email messages to their teachers and to other students within the district from this account.

    2. Prohibited conduct - Students will be held to the district’s Technology Acceptable Use Policy (815.1), and Bullying/Cyberbullying Policy (249).

    3. Access restriction - Access to and use of student email is considered a privilege afforded at the discretion of the Great Valley School District. The Great Valley School District reserves the right to immediately withdraw access and use of these services, including email, when there is reason to believe that a student has violated district policies or law. In such cases, the alleged violation will be referred to a building administrator for further investigation and possible disciplinary action.

    4. Security - The Great Valley School District cannot and does not guarantee the security of files located on Microsoft’s Office 365 for Education system. Although Microsoft filters unsolicited emails (junk), the Great Valley School District cannot guarantee that students will not receive unsolicited emails.

    5. Privacy - The general right of privacy will be extended as much as possible in an electronic environment. The Great Valley School District and all electronic users should treat electronically stored information in individuals' files as confidential and private. However, users of student email are strictly prohibited from accessing files and information other than their own. GVSD reserves the right to access the GVSD Microsoft 365 for Education system, including current and archival files of user accounts when there is reasonable suspicion that unacceptable use has occurred.  Visit the Office 365 Trust Center for more information regarding security and privacy.

Technology use in the Great Valley School District is governed by federal laws including:
CIPA’s policies require schools to have safety and security measures in place to protect children from accessing inappropriate content on the Internet (via Internet content filtering). CIPA parameters also prescribe student Internet access and use.

COPPA applies to commercial companies and limits their ability to collect personal information from children under 13. By default, advertising is turned off for the Great Valley School District Office 365 for Education. No personal student information is collected for commercial purposes.

FERPA protects the privacy of student education records and gives parents the rights to review student records. Under FERPA and corresponding Pennsylvania law, a student's education records are protected from disclosure to third parties.  Office 365 is FERPA compliant.
