Canvas Parent Observer Role

  • What is the Canvas Parent Observer Account?

As part of the One-to-One program, students in the Great Valley School District use a resource called Canvas.  Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) that allows teachers to create interactive, curriculum-related content for students.

In order to set up the Parent Observer Account in Canvas, your student will need to generate a pairing code.  We have provided directions on creating pairing codes below.  Please be aware that a new pairing code needs to be generated for each use.  If both parents want to create a Parent Observer Account in Canvas, the student will need to generate two separate pairing codes (one for each parent). Pairing codes expire after seven days.

Our students access Canvas via the iPad provided to them by the District.  Students primarily use Canvas' Student App to access Canvas.  However, as Canvas continues to make enhancements to its program, there are certain features (such as the student pairing code) that are not supported on the app.  Students can access the pairing code by logging into Canvas on Safari using their iPads.

We are excited to share with you that Canvas also offers a feature for parents that allows parents to access Canvas in one of the following two ways:

    • Browser:  When parents log into Canvas via an internet browser, they will be able to assume the role of an observer. This gives parents access to all of the same content as students.  Your access will be limited to the specific content for your student.
    • App: The app is streamlined to provide updates to parents about upcoming assignments and due dates.  Parents can use this tool to remain informed about upcoming assignments and events in the classroom.
