Congratulations to Great Valley High School teacher Tess Lutz on receiving the Delaware Valley Excellence in Teaching Award! 🎉 This prestigious award, presented by the FMFCU Foundation, recognizes 20 outstanding educators in the Philadelphia region who demonstrate dedication, innovation, and a true impact on their students. Tess's commitment to her students and the Great Valley community shines through and we are so grateful for all that she does!
On November 2, the Great Valley High School Marching Patriots performed their final field show of the season at MetLife Stadium. The 45-member band competed against 11 schools to earn fifth place in the nation. With a score of 91.2, the performance represents the highest score achieved by the band in Great Valley’s history. In celebration of the accomplishment, local ambulance and fire trucks formed a parade to escort the band on their route through Malvern Borough back to the high school.
Marching Band Director Alex Siwa encouraged everyone at Great Valley High School to “take a moment to recognize and congratulate a Marching Patriot for their tireless dedication to this athletic art form.” He continued to say that “If you have not had the pleasure of seeing our kids perform, please find a time next season to do so. They continue to make our Great Valley community proud and show others what our school has to offer!”
At its Aug. 19 meeting, the Great Valley Board of School Directors approved the appointment of Jordan Miller as athletic director. Miller will replace Michael Semar, the current athletic director.
Miller most recently served as the assistant principal, K-5, for Renaissance Academy Charter School, where he also previously taught physical education and health. He also previously served as the Athletics Department chair at the Delaware Academy of Public Safety and Security Charter School. Prior to his work in education, Miller was a police officer for the New Castle County Police Department.
“As I step into the role of athletic director,” said Miller, “I’m excited to build upon the legacy of Great Valley High School. My focus will be on empowering athletes to reach their full potential both on and off the field and fostering a supportive environment for the school community. I aim to strengthen our programs and enrich the experience for everyone involved.”
Miller earned his Master of Arts in Education Administration from Point Park University and his Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication from King’s College.
At its Aug. 19 meeting, the Great Valley Board of School Directors approved the appointment of Nicole Lombardi as special education supervisor. Lombardi has been a teacher on assignment/special education liaison for the district since Oct. 2022. As a supervisor, she will support special education services at Charlestown Elementary School and Great Valley Middle School.
In her role as special education liaison (teacher on assignment), Lombardi worked with secondary special education teams to support sixth and ninth grades, the Technical College High School, and out-of-district assignments. Previously, she worked in the Great Valley School District as a school-age speech and language pathologist responsible for the evaluation and team implementation of communication systems for nonverbal and limited verbal students across grade levels.
“I am excited to contribute to our Great Valley community by building strong relationships with our students, families, and staff,” said Lombardi. “I am dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment where all parties play an active role in the educational process. Together, we can create an inclusive and empowering experience for all.”
Lombardi, a doctoral candidate in the Education Leadership Program at Immaculata University, earned her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from La Salle University. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Disabilities from Elmira College. In addition, she holds a Pennsylvania State Teaching Certificate and a Supervisor of Special Education Certificate.
At its Aug. 19 meeting, the Great Valley Board of School Directors approved the appointment of Thomas Mulvey as an interim assistant principal at Great Valley Middle School. Mulvey’s appointment is through Nov. 22. He will support the efforts of Dr. Sharon Cohen, who is serving as the interim principal while the current principal is on leave.
Mulvey is a recently retired principal. His most current role was in the Sixth Grade Center in Downingtown Area School District, a role he held for ten years. Before that, he was the principal at Downingtown West High School and Downingtown Middle School. He currently serves as the regional support specialist for the Pennsylvania Principals Association. Mulvey says he seeks to use his experience to administratively assist school districts. In previous roles, Mulvey formed and led committees to develop new curricula, programs, and practices. He also created and led staff development opportunities, helped design and supervise Emotional Support, Autistic Support, and Multiple Disabilities programs, and created and led innovative learning practices. He has been a speaker at national and state conferences on topics related to schools and student learning.
“We are looking forward to the contributions that Mr. Mulvey will make to the district and to our middle school,” said Superintendent Daniel Goffredo. “As Dr. Cohen steps into the role of interim principal, Mr. Mulvey’s experience will complement her skills and talents. We are glad to have a strong leadership team in place for the start of the school year.”
Mulvey earned his Master of Arts in Education from West Chester University and his Bachelor of Arts from Pennsylvania State University. He earned his principal certification from Bowie State University.
