Redistricting Information

Each of our four elementary schools assigns attendance according to where a student lives geographically within the district. School redistricting means that we are redrawing our attendance boundaries to realign where students attend school according to where they reside. 

A decision about elementary redistricting was made by the School Board at the March 18, 2024 meeting.

Yes. The district will directly notify you via email and postal mail if your student will attend a different elementary school next year.

Changes will be implemented for the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

Yes. We are already planning for the transition of students from one school to another to ensure that the same services and supports are available without interruption. We are committed to ensuring that students receive the same high-quality support and education, regardless of the school they attend.

English learners receive specialized language services taught by an English Language teacher in all our schools. 

Yes. We have students in all of our schools who qualify for free lunch.

In most communities, the distribution of school-aged children changes over time as new housing developments are built and as families move in and out of existing neighborhoods. This is true in Great Valley as we have seen growth over time. Birth rates in the last several years have been at record highs. Our enrollment has increased by almost 300 students at the elementary level in the last four years and is expected to increase again by at least another 100 students over the next few years. Additionally, our elementary schools have reached their functional capacities.

To address these changes and produce an equitable distribution of students among different schools, we are engaged in the process of redistricting.

There are many factors considered when making redistricting decisions. Those include the preservation of neighborhoods, transportation times, the capacity of each school, each school's ability to accommodate growth, the diversity of the population within each school, and other things. We know that changing elementary schools can be a serious and emotional topic for families. However, to continue to operate in a sound manner and to provide enough space for our students in all schools, we must shift our attendance boundaries to match our enrollment. We are extremely careful in this process, and our goal is to make the best decisions we can for both now and the foreseeable future.

179 students are involved in the redistricting option that was selected by the School Board. 145 students will move from KDM to CT; 45 students will move from GW to KDM.

As we normally do at the end of every year, the district will examine needs across all of its schools for the coming year. Staff may be shifted from one school to another based on enrollments or the needs identified in each school, or we may need to hire additional staff. 

We strive to make every child's time on the bus as short as possible, while also making our routes as safe and efficient as possible. We ask our community to remember that we are still facing a shortage in our transportation staffing and that impacts our bus runs as well. The chosen option allows us to keep students' time on the bus close to what it currently is.

Our schools are committed to ensuring that all students, families and staff feel welcome and a part of the school community. To that end, principals are already thinking about transition and community-building events they will hold to welcome new families and staff members to their school. 

Our emails are sent to families in English and Spanish. They are also posted on our website where they can be translated into additional languages.
