National Junior Honor Society

  •

The "Ed Off Memorial Chapter" of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) was established several years ago. Inherent in membership are the ideals of scholarship, leadership, character, service and citizenship.  Students are elected by the faculty to the NJHS on the basis of character, leadership, scholarship & service.

There are two periods in which candidates will be considered for induction each year, one in late fall and one in early spring.  The first is for 8th grade students who, after the 1st marking period, have been a student of GVMS for at least one semester and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.  Students in his/her 8th grade year will receive a letter of invitation to be a candidate for induction into the NJHS.  The students whose candidate forms are accepted will be inducted at the Winter Induction Ceremony and will participate for the remainder of their 8th grade year.

The second candidate period is for 7th grade students who, after the second marking period, have attended GVMS for at least one semester and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.  Seventh grade students who meet this criteria will receive a letter of invitation to be a candidate for induction into the NJHS.  The students whose candidate forms are accepted at this time will be inducted at the Spring Ceremony and will participate through their 8th grade year.

The students who meet the above criteria for the scholarship portion receive invitations to submit evidence of leadership, character, service and citizenship through the candidate process.   No student is selected simply because of a high academic average; the NJHS strives to recognize the total student -- one who excels in all of these areas.

Membership is more than an honor. It carries with it certain privileges as well as responsibilities. Each member must become involved, and each student must continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that resulted in his or her selection. Members are actively involved in tutoring students during period 8, continue with their community service, and they help plan and execute various society activities

Officers are elected by the members at the start of the school year, and the positions are President, Vice-President, Secretary, & Treasurer.  Sponsors are Mrs. Search and Mrs. McGovern.
