Fall Sports & Marching Band Postponed
Update (September 9, 2020):
On August 14, the Chester County Health Department (CCHD) included the statement below in its School Guidance document:
…the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Department of Education today jointly recommend that Pre-K–12 school and recreational youth sports be postponed until at least January 1, 2021. The Chester County Health Department does not recommend competition in any sport. An assessment will be conducted in early 2021.
Based on the recommendation above, the Ches-Mont Athletic Conference recently voted to postpone all fall sports competitions. In light of this, the Great Valley School District will postpone the fall sports and marching band seasons. Although competitions are postponed, voluntary workouts and practices at the middle and high school levels will continue throughout the fall. These activities will adhere to social distancing guidelines and will be primarily conducted outside. This is congruent with our Health and Safety Plan and will keep students active and engaged. Our coaches and directors will communicate directly with families about these opportunities.
Without question, the benefits of our programs are clear, but the current climate and close proximity of competitions raise serious safety concerns in the midst of the pandemic. Our goal is to provide our students with opportunities to participate in fall sports competitions later in the school year. To that end, athletic directors are currently developing plans for an alternative fall sports schedule to be played after January 2021. Once an alternate fall sports plan is created and approved by the PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association), it will be promptly communicated. Alternatives for marching band are being explored as well. Additionally, should the CCHD’s guidance change, the Conference and District will re-evaluate their decisions.
It is important to note that during the last two months, COVID-related guidance has changed and has become more responsive to the pandemic over time. Therefore, no decision has been made regarding the winter sports season which begins on November 20. A great deal can happen between now and then. Therefore, the District will continue to monitor any changes in the guidance, as well as the status of COVID-19 cases in our county, before making any decisions. A decision regarding winter sports will be communicated in October.
Students who wish to engage in community-based programs, such as athletic leagues or camps, may certainly do so. However, students, coaches, and advisors are unable to affiliate themselves as a Great Valley sponsored team or unit. Doing so would violate PIAA regulations and conflict with the decision of the Great Valley School District.
Return to Regular Season Participation
The Return to Regular Season Participation Plan provides a plan for the Great Valley School District as we transition back into participation in regular season athletics and marching band. Although precautions will be implemented to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it is important to note that there is no way to eliminate all risk factors. Thus, families and students assume some risk by participating in these regular season activities. Our priority is always to keep our students, staff, and our community as safe as possible.
