Update: Winter Sports (December 8, 2020)

  • The GVSD Athletic Department sent the following update to athletes on December 8, 2020:

    Great Valley High School Athletes:

Last night, the Great Valley School District made the difficult decision to postpone all athletic activities until at least January. The Great Valley School Board will discuss winter athletics again at its meeting on January 11, 2021. While we are still hoping to have some sort of a season this winter, the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

I understand the important connections that are made between coaches, athletes, and teammates. To that end, coaches may reach out to you with workout suggestions, and to offer opportunities for you to make virtual connections with teammates. While it may be disappointing to not be able to participate in the traditional manner right now, we are all committed to staying connected and engaged with each other.

Thank you for the efforts you are making to keep yourself, your teammates, your coaches, and your family safe during these uncertain times. I will share more information about the winter season as it becomes available.

Update: September 21, 2020

  • At its meeting on Sept. 21, the Great Valley Board of School Directors authorized the District to begin fall high school sports practices, effective Sept. 22, 2020. This is a change to the previous decision to continue only voluntary practices for student athletes. The Board also approved revisions to the Athletic Health and Safety Plan, which outlines protocols and procedures for athletics and marching band during the pandemic. These changes reflect the Chester County Health Department's recent reversal of its prior recommendation to suspend all fall sports until January 2021.

On Sept. 21, the Ches-Mont League released guidance and protocols that include screening procedures for student athletes/staff, metrics for determining safe competition, expectations for student athletes, coaches, and staff, and recommendations for spectators. Additionally, all District 1 schools expect to hear from the PIAA about options and alternate schedules for the fall season, should they become necessary. Specific fall sports schedules are still being developed and will be shared by Great Valley coaches and posted on the Great Valley High School website once they are available. Coaches will also directly communicate with student athletes about practice schedules.

Please note that the Great Valley Middle School athletics program will continue with voluntary practices two times each week. Great Valley Middle School coaches will continue to communicate with middle school athletes.

Return to Regular Season Participation

  • The Return to Regular Season Participation Plan provides a plan for the Great Valley School District as we transition back into participation in regular season athletics and marching band. Although precautions will be implemented to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it is important to note that there is no way to eliminate all risk factors. Thus, families and students assume some risk by participating in these regular season activities. Our priority is always to keep our students, staff, and our community as safe as possible.
