Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs)

Great Valley School District prioritizes in-person instruction as the optimal learning environment for our students. However, we recognize the value of virtual learning as a tool to ensure educational continuity and minimize disruptions to student learning during inclement weather events such as snow days.

Closure Protocol

  • First three (3) closure days: Traditional snow days will be used. These are not built into the calendar and will be added as make-up days at the end of the year.

  • Following closures: Up to five (5) additional Flexible Instruction Days (FID) will be utilized for virtual learning to replace traditional closures, with the goal of limiting make-up days added to the end of the school year to no more than three (3).

When determining whether to implement a FID day, the district will consider various factors that may impact students' ability to participate in virtual learning, including wide-scale power outages that affect significant portions of the district, severity and duration of weather conditions, and safety concerns for students and families.

What to Expect During a Flexible Instruction Day

When Great Valley School District implements a Flexible Instruction Day, families and students can expect a coordinated effort to ensure seamless virtual learning. Here's what will happen:

  • Before the FID Day: When inclement weather is anticipated, students will be sent home with their district-issued devices the day before to ensure all students have access to necessary technology for virtual learning.

  • Emergency Notification: All families will receive the standard emergency notification system alert informing them that school is closed and virtual learning will take place for the day.

  • District Communication: The district will communicate to students and families with details about the virtual learning day.

  • Virtual Learning Activities: Students will participate in meaningful educational activities designed by their teachers, which may include live instruction, recorded lessons, independent work, and interactive assignments. Unlike during the COVID pandemic, lessons will not be recorded.

  • Technology Support: Technical support staff will be available throughout the day to assist families who experience technology difficulties or connectivity issues. Instructions on how to access WiFi will be provided as well.
