Joy of Reading!
“You may have tangible wealth untold:
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be --
I had a (parent) who read to me.”
- Strickland Gillilan
For the children who cross the threshold of our Kindergarten Kingdom, I believe it is my mission to not only teach them how to read, but -- more importantly -- how to fall in love with reading! It is my goal for our children to develop a strong reading identity and to assist them in creating a life in which reading is joyful, integral, and essential.
I believe that this goal will be achieved through an environment which teaches them that reading is magical and exciting and fun! We don’t learn to love reading through skill and drill and flashcards, but on the laps of those we love, hearing the words of our favorite stories read again and again. To that end, we will be reading every day in school, and I will urge the children to read at home with their families as well! I will be giving Reading Tickets to the Kindergarten children and encouraging them to fill out one reading ticket every day, with your help!
If you would kindly take a moment to write the title of a book that you and your child read together and send in the reading ticket via your child's folder, I would be so grateful. Once your child has used all of the reading tickets on the paper, he/she can request another one from me, or you can print a new one by clicking below.
A great parent resource is Jim Trelease’s The Read-Aloud Handbook: Jim is a great mentor to me, both as a parent and as a teacher.
