    Good evening students and families!

Below is the WOB for this week.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!

String Tech Missing Assignments Take a look at Canvas to check for any Missing Assignments for String Tech.  Please submit all missing work ASAP, and be sure to reach out if you have any questions!  I'm happy to help in any way I can :).

Asynchronous Tasks for String Tech:  Don't forget to check out Canvas for this week's Asynchronous Assignments!  Each week, you will have one or two tasks to work on to maintain consistency.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Instrument Issues:  We are working with the district to allow for some "drive up" instrument repair/tuning here at GVMS, but that is currently waiting for approval.  Until we hear more, I suggest reaching out to your instrument rental company to see if they are offering services in their stores.  Both Music & Arts and Taylor's Music will gladly do minor repairs and tuning right there in the store for you!  If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out!  I'm glad to help.

Lesson Books:  Just a reminder, students should work on getting their copy of our GVMS Lesson Book.  Please work to have your lesson book this week!  Books can be purchased online (Music & Arts, Amazon, etc.) or in the local Music & Arts store!  Below are the books to get:

8th grade – String Basics by Terry Shade & Jery Woolstenhulme (Book 3Green)

6th & 7th grade – String Basics by Terry Shade & Jery Woolstenhulme (Book 2 Blue)

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Private Lessons:  All middle school students should seriously consider taking private lessons outside of school.  The benefits of private study can be seen in school orchestra/lessons, as well as in improved responsibility, time management, and love for music!  I have a list of local private teachers that I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested.  Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions!

Orchestra Schedule:  The Orchestra schedule for this week is as follows ......

       MondayNo School - Yom Kippur
       Tuesday (Day 3a): Chamber Orchestra

    Good evening students and families!

I hope you have all been having a smooth transition back to school!  I think we can all agree that this is far from a typical start, but I've been very pleased with how everything has been going.

I cannot wait to start our first round of String Tech classes this week!  Below are some updates/reminders as we prepare for those classes:

GVMS Music Program Overview:  As a reminder, all students in the GVMS Orchestra program are enrolled in two separate courses:

    1. Ensemble Rehearsals: These are our 8th period rehearsals that meet two days per cycle. Unlike our Spring virtual schedule, we will be having 8th period this year while virtual!
      • All 7th & 8th grade students are enrolled in Symphonic Orchestra, which meets Days 1/2.
      • All 6th grade students are enrolled in String Orchestra, which meets Days 5/6.
    2. General Music – Orchestra Concentration (aka String Tech): This is our small group instruction time that will combine elements of General Music class and what used to be pull-out lessons.
      • All Orchestra students are scheduled for their String Tech class on Days 5/6 during one of their Special Areas rotations (it should be listed as “General Music” with me as the teacher).

6th Grade Orchestra Members:  Just a reminder, we will see each other for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 15 (Day 5) ... I'm looking forward to working with all of you!  Lots of information will be coming home this week ... stay tuned!

Asynchronous Monday:  Seeing as we haven't met for class yet, there is no specific assignment for tomorrow.  As we get further in the year, we will talk more about what you should work on during your day on Asynchronous Mondays!  That being said, I have posted a few resources as well as a practice schedule to help guide your work moving forward.  Take a look at what's posted and we'll discuss more during class this week!

    Good evening students and families!

Below is the first Weekly Orchestra Blog (WOB) of the 2020-2021 school year.  While it's definitely not the school year we'd normally expect, I am so excited to begin working with all of you again ... virtually or otherwise!

For any family new to GVMS Orchestras, I will send out the WOB every Sunday night (or, in this case, Monday ... the night before our next school day!).  In it, you will find news, updates, and important information for the upcoming week.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
