General Music Appreciation:
General Music Appreciation is the academic study of music taught to all Great Valley Middle School students as a spiraling curriculum throughout the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Through guided activities, active listening and music composition students experience a deeper appreciation and understanding of music. The sixth, seventh and eighth grade curricula combine to provide a consistent, age appropriate study of music with particular areas of focus at each level. The Sixth grade curriculum builds on the strong foundations laid at the elementary level and focuses on music history, listening and performance. Seventh grade emphasizes music composition and composers. Eighth grade curriculum explores contemporary music styles, singing and how music is used in our world of entertainment. Music classes meet daily for a set number of weeks varying by grade level. The curriculum supports the National Standards for the Arts as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Education Proposed Academic Standards for the Arts.
