Independent Reading Tips
Independent Reading is self-selected reading that students do on their own with books chosen at their reading level.
1. Select a "Just-Right" book.
** Five-Finger Test - Children select a page in a book they think they may enjoy. Count using their fingers on one hand, the number of unknown words found on the page. If there are five or more words, the book may be too difficult. **
2. Create a space at home to have a home library. Help your child select books to fill that library.
3. Create a cozy space for your child to sit and read at home.
4. Talk to your children about what book they are reading.
