    What's New in 304?

Here's what's happening the week of October 18th:

There is an in-service day on Monday, October 18th. There is no school for students.

We have a guidance lesson with Mrs. Schrecengost this week.

Reading – We will continue with our nonfiction unit. We will look at text features found in nonfiction books and we will discuss how they help readers. We will practice notetaking by finding the main idea and supporting details in sections of our texts. We will teach others about the new things we’ve learned.

Students are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes each night at home. There is not a reading log, but they do have response journals to complete each night. While we will be focusing on nonfiction texts in class, students can read any genre at home.

Writing – We will be stating nonfiction writing pieces. We will generate lists of topics that we know a lot about. We will brainstorm possible subtopics and start to collect information for our pieces.

Math – We will be starting unit 2 - multiplication. We will talk about properties of multiplication and spend some time practicing our facts. It is helpful if students spend some time on Dreambox at home.

Social Studies –We will finish up our unit on Explorers and Discovery. After working with Mr. Salerno in the library to discuss online research, we will work on an explorer poster on Seesaw. We will do a lesson on “You’re the Explorer” and we will wrap up our week with a game of Jeopardy.

Wordly Wise – We will continue lesson 3 this week. Our words are ambition, auction, coast, current, frail, intelligent, novel, resident, starve, and volunteer.

Word Study – We will continue to learn about our word study work this week. We will be completing all activities in class for now.

Handwriting – We have started instruction on cursive letters.
