How do we match texts to readers?

As we help students find independent reading books, we must understand the reader not just in the terms of reading level.  We must consider interests, motivation, developmental maturity, prior knowledge, purpose for reading, and available scaffolding support.

Scholastic Book Wizard allows you to search books by guided reading level. Be sure to check "guided reading level" (rather than lexile or grade level) when you search.

Even though a book matches a reader's independent guided reading level, we need to consider the developmental readiness of readers.  Check out Common Sense Media to help you to determine if the content within a book would be appropriate.
