K.D. Markley PTO
    Parent Volunteer Opportunities & Fundraisers

Parents are a vital part of making a child’s school experience positive and successful! Listed and described below are the many volunteer activities and fundraisers offered at K.D. Markley Elementary School. From these descriptions, you can determine which activities you may want to get involved in according to the time of year they take place, time requirements and whether they can be done from home or school.

We greatly appreciate any and all volunteers. If you are new to volunteering, it’s helpful to know that many activities and events take less time than one may expect. It is a great way to learn more about KDM, meet other parents, and have fun!

Please click here to complete our online form where you can select any volunteer events/activities that may interest you. To be considered as a Homeroom Parent Coordinator (description below), please complete this form by Friday, September 13th

This information is compiled and contact information will be submitted to each particular activity Chairperson. Each activity Chairperson will contact you directly in advance of the event. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the PTO Co-Presidents, Becky Tengwall (beckybtengwall@gmail.com) and Andrea Lanning-Guenster (andrea.lanning.guenster@gmail.com).

    Thank you for volunteering!

Fundraising Campaign – To take place between October and November 2019. Our goal is to raise money to help fund KDM multimedia equipment such as ELMOs for our classrooms and projector screens for our concerts. We will need help creating flyers, coming up with cool incentives for students, and spreading the word for this campaign. The majority of this will be done from home and will also consist of collecting forms and cash/checks and completing data entry to record donations.

Back to School Social – September 27, 2019. This event is held to welcome families to the 2019-2020 school year and will coincide with the Fall Scholastic Book Fair.  Complimentary desserts will be provided to KDM students with the same available for purchase for family members. We will need help setting up, cleaning up, and distributing wristbands to KDM students to receive their treats.

Teacher Appreciation – November 4, 2019. During parent-teacher  conferences we like to show our staff how much we appreciate their time, energy, and efforts as they mold the minds of our young KDM students. KDM PTO hosts a dinner for teachers and we need help; setting up and breaking down tables, making signs, organizing baskets, and cleaning up are a few of the ways you can help.

Heritage Night – February 19, 2020. Heritage Night is designed to be a colorful international bazaar where children showcase clothes, food, flags, pictures, songs, dances, artifacts etc. from their home country (or any country that they are interested in) and we celebrate the diversity of students and cultures represented in our school. A few volunteers are needed before the event to help make passports (this can be done from home). We will also need a few volunteers on the day of to help set-up and tear down the event.

Scholastic Book Fair – September 27, 2019 & March 2-6, 2020. This fundraiser allows parents to purchase books and goods for their children as well as an opportunity to buy books for their children’s classroom. The students visit the book fair during their regularly scheduled library time this week. Volunteers are needed to help organize the event, set up and clean up along with staffing the fair itself. Volunteer shifts are typically one to two hours. It’s a great way to get involved, meet other parents and help the students in selecting books.

Spring Fair – May 15, 2020. This event will have games, crafts, food etc. We also have class basket raffles and silent auction items. We are looking for committee members to help organize the evening’s events (entertainment and refreshments) throughout the months leading up to the event – please consider helping out.  In addition, many volunteers are needed to make this event a success so please mark your calendars NOW! Shifts are typically one to two hours on the day of event.

Field Day – May 8, 2020. KDM students are divided into teams and each team competes in a variety of events that are taught during their physical education classes.  This event requires many volunteers for both AM & PM shifts. Some of the jobs will be working water stations, score-keeping at game stations, and taking photos. It is held outside and a rain date will be announced if needed.

Designer Bag Bingo - March 20, 2020. Bring your luckiest charm to our Designer Bag Bingo event this spring. We need help setting up and breaking down the event as well as volunteers to help sell tickets, daubers, and water/light refreshments.  We are also looking for someone to collect and keep track of pre-event registrations and table assignments.  This task is completed at home using a google doc.

Homeroom Parent Coordinator – Ideally, each classroom has at least two Parent Coordinators and an unlimited number of Classroom Volunteers. All Coordinators will be notified by the teacher and should plan to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 24th at 7 pm.

    Parent Coordinator responsibilities include:

    • Serve as liaison between the teacher and classroom families.
    • Organize and delegate classroom volunteering.
    • Meet with the teacher and plan class parties.
    • Contact parents via email to volunteer for PTO activities as well as class specific activities requested by the teacher.
    • If possible, have a representative at the three PTO meetings throughout the year and share PTO information and emails with your classroom families.
    • Coordinate gifts for the teacher, if desired (birthday, holiday, end of year).
    • Collect funds to purchase and compile a themed “class basket” for the Spring Fair.

Box Tops – Volunteers are needed a few times throughout the year to help trim and count Box Tops. Clipping may also be done from home.

Mileage Club – A lunchtime recess favorite! Children in 2nd to 5th grade run or walk the perimeter of the playground and earn a foot for each mile they complete. The program runs during the fall and spring months. Five or more volunteers are needed, weather permitting, during lunch-recess to monitor students and help distribute the feet charms. Specific day(s) of Mileage Club for this year are to be determined. Recess spans from 11:35 am until 1:00 pm. We would greatly appreciate any time you can give.

Library – A great way to help out once a week. Join Mrs. Dowd and Mr. Salerno in the library to help organize, pull, shelf, and check out library books for the students.

Picture Day – Volunteer your time helping students line up and get ready to show their best smile to the camera on Picture Day! Check your calendars on September 23, 2019 & March 11, 2020 and let us know if you can help.

5th Grade Yearbook/Class Photographer This is for 5 th grade parents only. Parents from each 5 th grade homeroom will be responsible for taking pictures throughout the year and submitting to the yearbook committee chairs to compile. What a great way to help document your child’s last year at KDM!

5th Grade Graduation PartyThis is for 5 th grade parents only.  Parents are needed to help plan, organize and assist with the end of year party for graduating 5th graders.  Only parent volunteers are permitted to attend the party.  This is definitely a highlight of our students’ final year at KDM!

Volunteer “At Large” - Volunteer as you can! At times, there is a need for additional volunteers for different events or fundraisers. You will receive email requests throughout the year as volunteer opportunities arise. This gives you the most flexibility to choose your volunteer commitments based on your current schedule.

We’re also looking for some fresh ideas and creative chairpersons. If you like to plan events and would be interested in running one – new or old idea - let us know!
