This year we will be using Fountas and Pinnell's Leveled Literacy Intervention program (LLI) in combination with Reader's Workshop. Most students have used Reader's Workshop before, but may be new to LLI. This program is designed to give support to readers who need a more specifically designed approach to learning. We will be using LLI in small group settings, allowing for direct instruction. This will also allow your student and I to adjust the instruction to their own needs, and focus on the areas they need the most.
Topics covered in LLI include:
- Comprehension Skills
- Vocabulary Building
- Word Work (phonics/syllable work)
- Text Structures
- Print Features
- Discovering Themes
For Writing, we will be using a mix of LLI and Writer's Workshop. Writer's Workshop is a program that combines whole-group mini-lessons with time for individual and small group learning opportunities. We will be examining different writing topics, including narrative, opinion, and informative styles. Students will learn through both teacher-directed lessons, as well as their own personal writing journals.
