• Unit 4: How To Books

Writer’s Workshop will turn in a new direction – nonfiction! In this unit the writers will learn that they can use writing to teach others how to do something. These writers will need to be clear and sequential in writing.

Skills and Strategies Taught (What it looks and sounds like!):

    • Writers identify something they can teach others.

    • Writers write books with a specific sequence of steps that they want the reader to take. They use time ordered words such as first, next, then, and last.

    • Writers can offer “tips” or “helpers” in the books to aid the reader in following the steps.
Ways to support your child at home:
    • While completing any household task or cooking, note with your child the specific sequence of steps you are taking. Example: making a sandwich

    • Read recipes or other directions together (games) and note the steps listed in each.

    Ask your child:

    • Tell me the steps for brushing your teeth.
Answer:  Listen carefully to be sure all steps are listed!
