Snap words, otherwise known as high frequency words, are introduced throughout the year in Kindergarten.  The reason we call these words "snap words" is because we will see them over and over again in our books and use them frequently in our writing so will be able to read them and write them in a "snap!"  Rather than simply memorizing these words through flashcards, which does not always translate into true recognition of the word, you can help your child in learning these 25 core words by doing "Snap Word Hunts" when reading together.  We do this in Reading Workshop when partner reading...hunting for snap words and counting how many we can find on a page is fun AND puts the words in context, rather than in isolation (like on a flashcard), which helps to connect the words in text for the emerging reader!
