The month of February was officially recognized as Black History Month in 1976, but its origins go back 50 years prior when Carter G. Woodson had a vision for promoting African American history. Today, it is an annual celebration of the achievements by African Americans and a time we designate to recognize the central role they had in shaping U.S. history.

The Great Valley School District is excited to celebrate Black History Month across our school district and with our entire school community. While many areas of our curriculum infuse learning about black history throughout the year, our efforts in February highlight the rich intellectual, cultural, and societal accomplishments and contributions of African Americans.  Throughout the month, we will share stories, events and programs celebrating Black History Month in our schools. Additionally, we are pleased to share resources for our families who would like to use the month-long celebration as an opportunity to explore readings and activities with their children.

• Black Leaders in History - A video series designed to highlight influential Black Americans and to call attention to their contributions to shaping our society.  
• Celebrating Diversity in Our Curriculum - examples of how diverse voices, artists, musicians, and influencers are represented in our year-long curriculum.
