The School Board's Involvement with Uptown Worthington and the Proposed TIF (Tax Increment Financing)
At the Great Valley School Board meeting in March, representatives from O'Neill Properties Group made a presentation to the Great Valley School Board about the development of Uptown Worthington, a shopping/entertainment/residential development along Rts. 202 and 29. The developers also made a request that the School Board appoint representatives to a committee that also includes County and Township officials. The purpose of the committee is to discuss a possible financing structure designed to expedite development. Called a Tax Increment Finance Bond (TIF), the financing option allows funds for infrastructure development to be borrowed through the Chester County Industrial Development Authority (CCIDA). Artificial Turf Information
The Great Valley School District is aware of the situation in New Jersey where the Department of Health found higher than normal levels of lead in two of 12 artificial turf fields. Those two fields are currently closed and are constructed of an old "Astroturf" branded product that used nylon fibers. The Great Valley School District will proceed with the installation of artificial turf on two of its athletic fields on the middle/high school campus. However, the safety of our student athletes and our community remains our number one priority. Unlike the fields cited above, the district will use a product by FieldTurf for our artificial turf fields. The FieldTurf product uses polyethylene fibers and contains "very low or undetectable levels of lead." (See the press release from FieldTurf for more information.) Installation of the artificial turf is scheduled to begin in June, after school dismisses for the summer.

The Great Valley School Board approved a district calendar for the 2008-2009 school year. School will begin for students on September 2nd. See the calendar.

Budget Information Available
As a result of Act 1 legislation, the Great Valley School District (like all districts in Pennsylvania) is working this year within a budget calendar that is different than in previous years. More specifically, the legislation requires that districts bring forth a preliminary budget much earlier in the school year. In Finance Committee and full Board meetings, the Great Valley School District is having conversations about the 2008-2009 budget. Information related to the budget is available on this site.
