Excellence … A Great Valley High School Expectation

Volume V, No. 4 April 2000

From The Principal’s Pen …

As we spring into the 4th marking period, it is hard to believe that the 1999-2000 school year is rapidly coming to a conclusion. We all tend to be more relaxed when spring and warm days start reminding us of our summertime schedules and activities. Please reinforce that we all need to remain focused on our educational goals even throughout final examination days, which will conclude on Friday, June 16th.

Congratulations to the seniors who have been accepted to their schools of choice and if you are waiting for a specific school, keep an optimistic outlook. Commencement for the Class of 2000 will take place on Friday, June 9, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. in the stadium. Let’s all hope for a sunny, clear day. If the weather is uncooperative, Commencement will be held in the gymnasium with the overflow of friends and family viewing the exercises in the auditorium on closed circuit TV.

Special thanks to Mrs. Jill Franks, Mr. Robert Sprague, students, parents and faculty who assisted in making this year’s Danish Academic Exchange Program a tremendous success. Many hours of planning go into the program, and it is our vision that we will continue to support exchange programs that have students living, learning and experiencing different cultures.

As shared in a letter of March 17th, high school administrators discussed their concern regarding some recent incidents that have taken place at our school involving substance abuse. We continue to encourage all parents and guardians to make every effort to stay in close communication with their children and informed of their social choices and activities. It is our desire that our community, parents, staff and students will continue to work together addressing and improving the attitudes and choices regarding drugs and alcohol.

Please remember if you have questions concerning a component of your daughter’s/son’s educational program, please call us and we will connect you to the appropriate person or department that will be able to assist you. Thank you again for supporting our school programs both academic as well as extra-curricular.

Have a great spring!!

Drama Guild Prepares For Spring Musical

The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the 1986 winner of Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score and Best Orchestrations, will be presented by the Great Valley Drama Guild as they kick off their 27th year and first show of the 21st century. With book, music and lyrics by Rupert Holmes, Drood is a musical comedy about a theatre company in Victorian London that stages a musical version of Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel up to the point at which he stopped when he died. Since Dickens never solved the mystery of who killed the title character, the audience resolves the play via a number of key votes. The first decision for the audience is to select from among five possible Dick Datcheries (a clearly disguised detective who has been snooping around the second act in a long coat and a beard) to solve the case. Next, they must select by ballot a murderer from among seven logical candidates. Finally, they will agree upon a happy ending, uniting in romance two of the remaining characters. The audience may make the ending as feasible or as outrageous as it pleases. Altogether the cast of Drood must be ready to perform eight hundred possible endings.

Throughout the play, the cast mingles with the audience, inviting them to participate by cheering for the favorite character and booing the villain. Before the play begins, the entire cast of characters mingles with the audience, introducing themselves and setting up the night’s agenda. The musical begins when Mr. William Cartwright, (Brian Crawford) the Chairman and Principle Player of the Musical Hall Royale, invites the ensemble onstage to welcome one and all (There You Are). From that point the musical takes full advantage of the play-within-a play motif. All cast members play two roles, characters in the troupe’s production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and their real-life Victorian counterparts.

Edwin Drood , played by London’s leading male impersonator, Miss Alice Nutting (Kimberly Adams) is engaged to the naive Rosa Bud, portrayed by the less innocent company chorine, Miss Deidre Peregrine (Katie Hrapczynski). Edwin’s cousin, the clearly villainous choirmaster, John Jasper, as portrayed by the company’s leading man, Clive Paget (James Grant) has designs on Rosa and thus presents a clear motive for wanting Edwin Drood out of the way. But there are other suspicious characters to consider: Neville and Helena Landless, (Stephen Jay Bailey and Lisa Eve D’Annunzio), twins from Ceylon, who have felt the sting of Drood’s disdain; the Reverend Crisparkle, (Matthew Perrone) who once wooed and lost Rosa’s mother; the luckless Bazzard (Samuel W. Kohler); the mysterious Princess Puffer (Elizabeth Fraatz), doyen of a London opium den, and the slovenly Durdles (Elizabeth Wolkomir), who takes care of the graveyard during the day, and lives in it by night. Although young Deputy (Carin Beam) is not a murder suspect, he is a candidate for one of the lovers.

Also taking featured roles in the production are Meridith Bickford, Bill Patchak, Christopher Haag, Andrea Palmer, Whitney LaPlante, Lindsey Emerson, Brian Richardson, and Paige Sawin. Ensemble members include Ashley Bellgrau, Leigh Ann Bishop, Nicole Boyance, Christine Brennecke, Stephanie Brown, Todd Cavalcanto, Lauren Christopher, Rachel Christopher, Kate Lynne Dodd, Liz Ewasko, Hailley Field, Ben Greene, Nathalie Hall, Laura Hrapczynski, Devin Klein, Heather McClain, Meghan Millin, Mike Mugridge, Jim Mulherin, Halli Murray, Elizabeth Nagy, Vanessa Pyne, Shawn Rice, Jennifer Roy, Laura Sapyta, Erin Sharer, Meghan Sharer, Bill Snyder, Marian Sunnergren, Elizabeth Trubey, Kirstin Webster, Dana Zelig, and Anneliese Zimmerman.

Apprentice Director Meghan Sharer, and Technical Director Justin Morgan assist Director Lisa Eaton and producer Alan Schmuker. Student Producer Victoria Bell assists set Designer Bruce Bellgrau. Choreography is by Rhonda D’Annunzio. Douglas E. Wilfert will conduct the 36-member student orchestra. Costume Designer is Kati Hrapczynski.

Performances of Drood will take place at 8:00 PM in the Great Valley High School Auditorium (corner of Route 401 and Phoenixville Pike) on Fridays and Saturdays April 28 & 29, and May 5 & 6. In addition, there will be a matinee performance on Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 PM. For the matinee performance of Drood, senior citizens will be admitted free of charge.

For Tickets and Group Sales: please call Anne LaPlante at 610.647.8420.

Nurse’s Notes

Mrs. Sandra Horosky, School Nurse

PARENTS: THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA HAS AMENDED THE LAW. As of September 2000, ALL students in ALL grades must have a SECOND Measles booster, usually given as MMR: measles-mumps-rubella.

I am in the process of reviewing the school records of each student. I will send a notice home to anyone for whom I don’t have the #2 MMR. The last time that we received updated student information was on the 6th grade physical.

THEREFORE, a notice sent to you does not mean that your child needs another immunization, it means that we do not have the date in our files.

Please provide the date from your records on the tear off part of the letter and return it to me. If your child hasn’t had the booster, they will need to have one. We are trying to bring this all up to date as of June 1st to avoid last minute chaos. If you have any questions, please call me anytime, 610-889-1943. Thanks for your help!!

District Council is the parent organization for parenting education in the Great Valley School district. As such, we are trying to determine what is the most effective way to present information to parents. Would you be more likely to attend issues on parenting that are presented through this series on the first Thursday evening of the month, or issues presented at your child’s school through the PTO?

Please use the space provided below to give us your ideas for future engagements. What topics or speakers would you like to see? How can we make this program more effective for you? ___________________________________________________

Thank you for taking the time to attend this year’s Parenting Lecture Series. Your input is invaluable to the success of the series and we appreciate your involvement.
